Elroy Clarke Obituary & Death, Florida: Charlotte County man Died in Punta Gorda deputy-involved shooting identified

Elroy Clarke Obituary & Death, Florida: The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies fatally shot a man in his driveway shortly after noon on Wednesday. Sheriff Bill Prummel explained that the man initially called 911 to have someone removed from his home. However, when deputies arrived and attempted to serve him an outstanding warrant, he reportedly charged at them.

Deputies were responding to a disturbance involving Elroy Clarke and Troy Johnson, which authorities classified as a civil matter. During the incident, deputies discovered Clarke had an outstanding warrant, but he resisted arrest. According to authorities, multiple non-lethal methods were attempted to subdue Clarke.

“They tried a Taser multiple times, but it had no effect,” Prummel said. “Pepper spray was deployed, but it didn’t work. They also used a baton, and at one point, three deputies were hands-on while he was on the ground. He threw them off like they were ragdolls.” Sheriff Prummel noted that two deputies ultimately discharged their firearms. The Sheriff’s Office has indicated plans to release the bodycam footage after a review.

As of Wednesday night, Johnson remains in custody. The two deputies who fired their weapons are currently on administrative leave.
